In May 2013, a series of nonviolent demonstrations broke out in protest of an urban development plan to transform İstanbul's Gezi Park. Police responded with the use of pepper spray and water cannons. Demonstrations soon spread across Turkey to protest a variety of issues such as freedom of expression, press, assembly and divergence from secularism.
