nov 1, 2001 - Invasion of Afghanistan
Description:
The Americans took direct military actions to prevent another such terrorist attack against the U.S. homeland. In November 2001, U.S. ground forces invaded Afghanistan to disarm the Taliban and find bin Laden. The Taliban were quickly defeated, and the U.S. helped form a new government in Afghanistan. Efforts to locate bin Laden were unsuccessful for 10 years. The Taliban rebuilt their forces in neighboring Pakistan and launched attacks on U.S. and international military posts in Afghanistan, using suicide bombers and roadside bombs. Finally, in May 2011, bin Laden was shot and killed in Pakistan during a raid by U.S. military personnel.
