Fought near Petersburg, Virginia, a vital station for the confederate capital Richmond, Virginia, Ulysses S. Grant knew that if he captured Petersburg, he would capture Richmond. Union General William F. Smith fought his army of 10,000 against the confederate defenders of Petersburg. They were outnumbered, however, they had formidable physical defenses, so the fighting lasted a few days. Then, Ulysses S. Grant, with his army of 100,000, began to surround Petersurg. It, eventually, was a Union victory.
On April 2, 1865, the Confederate government fleed Richmond, Virginia. Once the Union captured Petersburg, they captured Richmond easily.
