may 15, 1991 - The rise of “people-first” language.

Description:

After the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, consciousness was raised about the experiences of people with disabilities (Esteves, 2012). With an increase of empathy backing the movement, the rise of people-first language occurred rapidly. People-first language is acknowledging an individual is a person first with their disability as a secondary characteristic. For example, one would say “student with a disability” instead of “disabled student”, “student in a wheelchair” instead of “wheelchair-bound student”, and “individual with a visual impairment” isneta dof “blind individual.” The rise of people-first language is the embodiment of the current era of empowerment.
