apr 8, 1850 - Compromise of 1850

Description:

"The compromise of 1850 negotiates a settlement between those who support slavery expanding west and those who oppose it. The Fugitive Slave Law is strengthened even further. California is admitted as a free state. Texas, a slave state, cedes some territory but gets debt relief from the federal government. The slave trade (although not slavery itself) is banned in Washington, D.C. Finally, residents of the territories of Utah and New Mexico are allowed to decided on their own if they will allow slavery. (They do, although slavery is rare in both places).

Many historians credit the Compromise of 1850 with delaying the Civil War by a decade."
