oct 22, 1854 - Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854)

Description:

"The Kansas-Nebraska Act creates the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and allows popular sovereignty to decide the slave status of each.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act divided the nation, as well as the Democratic and Whig political parties. An upstart politician in the new Republican party, Abraham Lincoln of Illinois, disputed the act in speeches that opposed slavery on moral, legal, and political grounds."
