"An enslaved blacksmith named Gabriel organizes a major revolt in Virginia.
Fearing future uprisings, Gabriel and 25 others were hanged. State legislatures passed restrictions limiting the movement the movement of free blacks, as well as prohibiting the education, assembly, and hiring out of slaves."
