apr 26, 1772 - Ukawsaw Gronniosaw writes autobiography

Description:

"Ukawsaw Gronniosaw, also known as James Albert, writes the first autobiographical slave narrative. The narrative chronicles his life from capture in what is now Nigeria through slavery and poverty in England.

Slave narratives--often promoted by the abolitionist movement--provided crucial accounts of the reality of slavery. More than a hundred slave narratives were published before emancipation, and thousands more recorded in the 19th and 20th century."
