jan 1, 1800 - William Nicholson and Anthony Carlisle decomposed water into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis with a voltaic pile. Johann Wilhelm Ritter duplicated the experiment with a rearranged set of electrodes to collect the two gases separately.
