oct 21, 1868 - Hayward Earthquake
Description:
The Hayward Earthquake was the first major earthquake in the history of California as an independent nation, just a few short years after independence. Striking along the Hayward Fault, the earthquake was much less destructive than its later counterpart, given that the region was less built up and that it occurred further away from the denser urban area of San Francisco.
Despite its destructive nature, killing 30 and causing nearly 350,000 USD in damages, the earthquake was often dismissed in the area, to their detriment, as it foreshadowed the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 that would nearly destroy the city of San Francisco and kill thousands.
