apr 18, 1906 - Great San Francisco Earthquake

Description:

At 5:12 AM, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Bay Area as a 500 kilometer section of the San Andreas Fault ruptured. The 42 second shock devastated the region, particularly the city of San Francisco, which had nearly 85% of its development destroyed either by the main quake or the subsequent fires that torched much of the city.

The destruction devastated California physically and economically, with the nation's main financial center being obliterated and causing the "Earthquake Crash" that set off a wave of recessions and depressions across North America. The effects of the panic would last for another 3 years, and San Francisco would take almost 7 years to fully rebuild.
