jul 4, 1776 - Declaration of Independence was ratified
Around mid-June, 1776, a five-man committee, including Thomas Jefferson, were tasked with drafting a formal statement of the colonies' intentions. Thomas Jefferson had divided the document into five sections: an introduction, preamble, a body (divided into two sections), and a conclusion. The introduction stated that independence from Britain was "necessary", while the body outlined a list of grievances against the British crown. Through much revision, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4th.
