The first worm appeared on the ARPANET. The “Morris Worm”, developed by a student at Cornell, exploited the lack of intrustion prevention system and connected to another computer, used vulnerabilities to copy itself, and send itself to a new location. The Morris Worm brought to light many of the vulnerabilities of networked computers. At this point, influential leaders in the network decided to begin developing network security methods to counter network threats.
