Field Marshal von Hindenburg and General Ludendorff had realised that this was a last-ditch effort by Germany to win the war, especially against the new and strong American troops. Initially made significant ground and restored German morale, but eventually American troops (>100,000) retaliated, and within a few weeks, Germany had lost all ground.
