apr 28, 1915 - First Battle of Krithia

Description:

The First Battle of Krithia was the first Allied attempt to advance in the Campaign during World War One. The advanced was planned so that France would hold its position while the British line would move to capture Krithia. The plan was too complex and poorly communicated and the attack became out of anyone's control. The Ottoman resistance held back the British advances and as the terrain became difficult farther up the peninsula the troops became outflanked. After the fighting, the British secured the main landings. The Ottoman defensive line succeeded at the beaches and caused the British to overestimate their opposition, thinking they were facing two divisions when they really outnumbered the Ottoman troops by 3 to 1. The attack broke down because of poor planning, lack of communication, and the defensive power of the Ottoman troops. This First Battle of Krithia was significant because it disproved the assumed easy victory the British thought they would have.
