jan 2, 1155 - ✎ Pope Adrian IV crushed the insurrection (led by Arnold of Brescia) with help from Barbarossa (1155)
Description:
The people of Rome supported Arnold of Brescia because they liked his message that the pope should not control the city, but Pope Adrian IV demanded Arnold’s removal, and when the city refused, the pope shut down all church services, creating so much pressure that the Romans finally stopped protecting Arnold; then, when Emperor Barbarossa arrived in 1155, he arrested Arnold and handed him over to the pope’s officials, bringing the long rebellion to an end.
