-High alcohol consumption leads to crime, poverty, and abuse.
-Protestant ministers and reformers had concerns

Effects
-American Temperance Society created to persuade drinks to take a pledge of total abstinence
-Washingtonians formed by recovering alcoholics
Factory workers and Politicians joined efforts to increase output of work
-Maine prohibited manufacture and sale of liquor
