oct 21, 1999 - Kingsoft launches “Red Legitimate Software Storm” to promote affordable legal software.

Description:

On October 21, Kingsoft Corporation announced an ambitious and risky plan at a press conference: the “Red Legitimate Software Storm.”

Kingsoft President Qiu Bojun and General Manager Lei Jun jointly declared that, in order to strengthen the promotion of legitimate software, the company would launch its two mainstream utility programs—Kingsoft PowerWord 2000 and Kingsoft Translator 2000—at a dramatically reduced promotional price. The price would drop from 168 yuan to just 28 yuan, which is below the 30-yuan psychological threshold most Chinese users were willing to pay for legal software at the time.

Kingsoft aimed to sell over one million retail copies of these two products within 100 days of launch—a move intended to set a new record in China’s software retail history.
