jan 1, 1953 - Public Law 280
Description:
Transferred federal jurisdiction over tribal lands to a handful of states, terminating federal-tribal relationship. Termination meant the withdrawal of federal services, loss of federally empowered tribal govs, loss of federal trust status over lands. Partially a result of anger towards relative prosperity of Native Americans during the Great Depression. Economically prosperous tribes were targeted for termination (ex. the Menominee).
