Encouraged intellectuals and leaders to speak openly and independently about the country’s problems, and so let “a hundred flowers bloom”, to revitalize Chinese Arts and Sciences. This was significant in that initially people supported his vision and programs for the best of the society. However, this event also led to a lot of dissents and caused Mao to crack down on the dissidents.
