Planck kickstarted quantum physics with the idea of quantization. A quantum is the smallest amount of energy of a particular wavelength or frequency of light to be absorbed. There was no explanation in modern physics for how matter could absorb light energy, despite the correct blackbody radiation graphs Planck created, and from here, modern physics commenced.
