Description: America needed to be closer to the Japanese homeland to attack them and Iwo Jima would bring America closer to Japan. The battle was unpredictable because there were airfields containing bombers and kamikazes, but America eventually won the war. The victory resulted in America being closer to Japan.
Significance: America was now closer to being able to attack the Japanese mainland.
