The Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869 at Promontory, Utah. Stretching across the continent from coast to coast, it revolutionized transportation in the west by combining the Eastern Railroad System with California's Railroad System. This was significant as it made shipping mail and goods faster, cheaper, and more efficient; however It also took land away from Native Americans and many were killed in the early stages. The Transcontinental Railroad influenced the Gilded Age period and successful Captains of Industry like Andrew Carnegie because they relied heavily on this method of transportation for their businesses, allowing America's wealth and production rates to skyrocket as efficiency was increasing.
