Early in the moring, Dakota soldiers surround New ulm, and the fighting soon moves into town. Dakota fire on the town’s defenders from windows and doorways, Little Crow’s men set fire to buildings near the river, and the smoke causes panic and confusion. The defenders do not give up, and after several hours of fighting, the Dakota retreat at sunset , leaving 32 townspeople dead, more than 60 townspeople wounded, and more than a third of the town lies in ruins.
