Hundreds of the Dakota people who surrendered or were captured were tried in a military court and were convicted if raping and murdering civilians. President Abraham Lincoln commutes the 264 prisoners. The president condemns 38 people to death. Originally he condemns 39 but one of them got reprieved. This is the biggest mass execution in US history.
