Gave citizenship to anyone born or naturalized in the U.S. An important part of this amendment is that it stated that no state could deny anyone life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness, without due legal process. This gave ex-slaves a secure place in society as citizens ,and secured their rights of happiness.
