Lenin died in January 1924 and in May his Testament (Lenin's dictated letter to the party criticizing Stalin and urging his removal as general secretary) was read aloud at the Central Committee but Stalin remained General Secretary.
Zinoviev and Kamenev again began to fear Stalin's power and felt that their positions were threatened, they left and became alliances with Trotsky (leader of the revolt against Stalin). Later, Kamenev, Zinoviev, and Trotsky would all be murdered on Stalin's orders.
