In the 1840s , people started to denounce King Philippe's government. The citizens thought that the government was corrupt and wanted to expand suffrage. The people lost jobs and poor harvests overcame the people. Politicians then became blamed in newspapers. The citizens rebelled and the government executed about 1,500 people. Members issued a constitution that called for all males to be able to vote and created a government containing a president and one-house legislature.
