On June 11th Gilmore unsuccessfully attacked Fort Wagner but was later reinforced and made plans to attack again. The 54th Mass Infantry (regiment of all black soldiers captured the outer rifle pits and killed Robert Shaw. Then entered the fort with a head-to-head battle with many casualties. This attack on Fort Wagner was majorly supported by the Black infantry soldiers and showed many people that African Americans were capable of bravely fighting for their Country. With a Union victory it allowed The Union to forced the Confederates to retreat also known as Sherman’s March to Sea.
