Grant and his Union soldiers had many attempts to gain Vicksburg but found the Confederate troops well entrenched. This caused the Union forces to build fifteen mil long trenches enclosed the Confederates in the perimeter. It was soon after this the Union would gain control of the City of Vicksburg. With the Union victory and gaining control of Vicksburg had a major impact on the city and its civilians causing them to stop celebrating the 4th of July, along with terrible living conditions. The battle of Vicksburg was very important and also led to the conflict known as Fort Wagner.
