When the Union troops found a detailed copy of the Confederates movements of special order 191. The Confederates ran into Union defense and had many casualties. Lee was going to retreat back to Virginia, but he found out Stonewall Jackson took control of Harper's Ferry and Confederate troops regroup at Antietam Creek. Both sides shot at each other in a cornfield owned by David Miller. French arrived and pushed the Confederate troops back Lee and the next day his troops retreated back to Virginia and McClellan did nothing. This Union victory allowed President Abraham Lincoln to release the Emancipation Proclamation angering the South even more. This battle was important and led Gettysburg in the following year.
