An opponent of slavery, self-taught lawyer and legislator, Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States in 1861. With the start of the Civil War, Lincoln proved to be an excellent military strategist and leader. His creation and idea of the Emancipation Proclamation created a route of the abolition of slavery in the US. However he was assassinated by John Wilkes booth only a few days before the Civil War ended with the surrender of Appomattox, so he never saw the abolition of slavery. However he is considered one of the greatest Presidents in United States history.
