After William McKinley was assassinated, unexpectedly a young Republican politician Teddy Roosevelt became the twenty-sixth president of the United States. Although Roosevelt was young he made great efforts to break up industrial combinations, passing the Sherman Antitrust Act. Being the dedicated conservationist he was he set aside over 200 million acres of land, to support national forests, reserves and wildlife. Roosevelt was a major voice in the creation and building of the Panama canal and was excellent with negotiations regarding the Russo-Japanese War and with those accomplishments during his presidency he won a Nobel Peace Prize. After his Presidency he left the white house for a safari and then later returned to politics in 1912, with a fail run for presidency in the Progressive Party.
