Leading up to the Missouri compromise tensions grew between pro and anti slavery states. After Missouri's request to be admitted to the Union as a slave state, tensions throughout the US. The Congress wanted to maintain peace amongst pro and anti-slavery states, they created a compromise admitting Missouri as a slave state but also Maine as a free state. They also passed and amendment drawing a line in the former Louisiana territory separating free and slave states. This remained a law until The Kansas-Nebraska Act repealed it.
