As armed conflict continued between the British and the colonies the desire for independence grew. In Mid- June a committee of five men including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin wrote a draft of the colonies intentions with the British. On July 4th(now celebrated at the Forth of the July) the colonies formally adopted the Declaration of Independence mainly written and developed by Jefferson.
