An Italian explorer Christopher Columbus set sail on August 3rd 1492 with three ships named the Santa María, Pinta and the Niña and landed in present day Venezuela, thinking it was an island he claimed it for Spain. Later in the month he found Cuba which he thought was mainland China and explored more to encounter Hispaniola, which Columbus thought was Japan. He returned home to Spain and was named “admiral of the Sea” because he returned with gold and riched. Quickly a second voyage was set up with hope that it would be just as successful as the first.
