What is it? Freedom Summer was a voter registration drive which was intended to increase the number of registered black voters so that more of the black population would excercise their right to vote. Over 700 volunteers mainly white volunteers joined african americans in to fight against voter intimidation and discrimination at the polls. Congress on Racial Equality and Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee were examples of organizations that helped organize this event. However, the Freedom Summer volunteers were met with heavy violence from the Ku Klux Klan and law enforcement, and this brought a lot of the nation's attention to the movement as there were many beatings, false arrests, and even murders.
