Anarchists and the POUM (Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification) were integrated into the Army, but experienced resistance from other Soviet-aligned communist groups because they were outlawed and denounced. Andrés Nin, the leader of the POUM, along with many other members were murdered by Communists, with the help of the USSR's NKVD. In may of 1937, anarchists and communists fought for control of strategic points in Barcelona.
