4 oct 1934 año - Miner Strikes in Asturias

Descripción:

As tensions rose between workers and the government strikes became more common and more violent. One of the more significant strikes was the miner strike in Asturias. The miners were armed and even though they were poorly equipped and outnumbered they were able to hold off the Spanish army for nearly two weeks. These workers were afraid of the possibility of Spain becoming Fascist as nearby European countries were falling into a Fascist form of government. This strike emphasized the growing conflicts between the government and the working class. Violence was becoming more normal and peaceful protest was no longer effective. This event was also used by the right wing to accuse left wing members like Azana of supporting these violent strikes and even arming the miners to fight the Spanish army.
