Descripción:

On Wednesday I opened the social media app “Instagram” to view feed from friends, browse content and check Instagram’s privacy policies. This event relates to the political and cultural/societal factors of globalization as it pertains to policies, values and material culture beginning to look similar. The privacy policies outlined on Instagram’s US website (linked through the app) were the same as the privacy policies outlined on the Canadian website. This is an example of globalization as it demonstrates how one countries’ policies and values bleed into trading partners. Another way that this can be shown is through feed on Instagram.
“Social media culture” is a culture influenced by anyone and everyone who uses a form of social media. However, influences such as what celebrities and stylists own or approve of largely influence the material culture of the general population on the app regardless of where they are on the planet. For instance, the concept of “influencers,” otherwise put as Instagram’s version of a celebrity originated in the United States, however, the concept of influencers has spread to various other parts of the world, particularly East Asia. Although the concept of influencer originated in the US, influencers in parts of East Asia are now influencing American streetwear and television through the app. In a sense this is very “full circle,” and it does support the idea of one global material culture where influences are taken from all over the world.
In addition, while scrolling, I found that most people on Instagram rarely repeat their outfits part in parcel due to consumerism culture. Instagram is one of many social media sites that fuel consumerism culture, in order to save face and prove to those viewing your feed that you are “trendy” most people take to buying “trendy” goods and posting them on their account. Consumerism is a consequence of globalization.
