Descripción:

On Thursday I used my Macbook Air to finish an English essay. My ability to obtain a Macbook is largely due to the factors of economics and politics in relation to globalization and came with the consequence of environmental repercussions. According to Apple’s website the Macbook Air is designed in California, and recent expose’s on Apple have confirmed that Macbooks are assembled in China. This is an example of off-shore outsourcing and reinforces the notion that the low cost of globalization makes it affordable for businesses, this concept is known as globalization of production. The widespread availability of technology also plays a role in this given that Apple products are constantly being shipped out of China to other countries with the efficiency of modern transportation. In addition, the concept of borderless finance is of concern as Apple made investments in China and Chinese workers to create and maintain Apple factories. However, there are controversies on whether or not producing Macbooks and other Apple products is sustainable. This is where the environmental factor of globalization comes into play. Apple among other companies uses polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). PVC is made from a known carcinogen and can release chlorinated dioxins when burned for disposal or leach chemicals if buried in a landfill. BFRs bioaccumulate and can release bromine in hazardous forms when burned for disposal. These chemicals are highly toxic and when burned or buried will damage the surrounding land, negatively impacting crop vitality.
