Descripción:

On Saturday I worked at Kumon, a tutoring company based in Japan with a North American subsidiary and locations in East Asia. This event relates to the economic aspect of globalization given that Kumon is an example of a Multinational Company based in richer countries and as a result, poorer countries such as neighbouring Philippines are not benefitting from the trade seeing that the Philippines is home to hundreds of Kumon locations yet much of money made off of the service does not stay in the Philippines, it goes back to the company’s home base of Japan. That being said Kumon expanding its locations has opened up numerous jobs in countries like the Philippines that would not have been there had Kumon not taken advantage of globalization.
Additionally, this event emphasizes the concept that each economy is dependent on another. For instance, if Kumon were to go bankrupt due to a lack of success in Asia, Kumon locations in North America are more likely to go out of business as well due to a lack of funding from franchisors. This would, in turn, put people in North America out of jobs. In other words, the lack of success in one part of the world would have repercussions in a very different part of the world.
