Jamestown was founded by the Virginia Joint Stock Company and was named after the British King James. It was a proprietary colony and utilized tobacco as its main source of revenue. It was caused by the European quest for new land for agriculture, religious freedom, and expansion of empires. Its historical significance was that it was the first permanent English settlement in North America, and set a precedent for many colonies that came after it.
