26 mar 1862 año - Lesser known battles Battle of Glorieta Pass

Descripción:

By some called the Gettyburg of the west the battle of Glotieta Pass was one of the fewer battles fought in the west. While the Union was focusing on winning battles in Virginia and Tennessee, the confederates tried to force a break through New Mexico.

The attendance of the Federal army was scarce and the Confederate army marched to the end of Glorieta Pass, to set up camp. The Confederate army however was spotted by the Federal army. The Union army under Chivington followed the Confederates and initially attacked them, this attack failed. Chivington then decided to play a tricky move and spilt up his troops to attack the Confederates from both sides of the pass. The Confederates set up a defence, both sides suffered casualties.

The next day both sides received reinforcements and the battle continued on day three. Both sides kept attacking one another but could not force a clear victory or breakthrough. Technically the battle ended in a draw, however the Union managed to destroy Confederate supplies thus stopping them from forcing a break through New Mexico.
