The Black Death is also known as the Great Plague, which was one of the most devastating pandemics in history. This resulted in the death of between 75-200 million people lasting between 1347 to 1351. The plague arrived in Europe in October of 1347 when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at the Sicilian port of Messina. Where people gathered at the where they met with a horrifying surprise. Most sailors were dead and the ones still alive, were gravely ill and covered with black boils that oozed with blood and pus. What was believed to have caused the disease is the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which is mainly found rodents and the fleas that feed off them.
