I think that this was very important as we started to realize that preserving natural life was vital for other species survival. We realized that we were able to do something about saving our planet sort of thing.
A long term impact this is had is that other countries and even our own states create National Parks to help preserve what we have so people can enjoy it, and more importantly the wildlife can live in peace.
