17 oct 1989 año - Loma Prieta Earthquake

Descripción:

The first truly major earthquake since the Great 1906 Earthquake, Loma Prieta caused severe damage throughout the southern Bay Area, as well as some damage in the north. Collapsed freeways and a broken section of the Bay Bridge put more emphasis on the BART system and saw ferries re-implemented as part of the Bay Area's transport networks.

Its most lasting effect, however, was forcing the government of California to implement lasting preparations for earthquakes into its plans for the future. A commissioned report for President Sáenz made recommendations for requiring that buildings in earthquake-prone areas be reinforced, that tall buildings have mandatory defenses against collapsing, and that infrastructure needed to be prepared for any potential earthquake events. These recommendations are still in effect to this day.
