Chancellor Schiedemann resigned rather than sign, so a new government of the SDP and Centre Party formed. Germany was forced to sign, or risk Allied retaliation. There was also a massive Allied blockade on Germany, which had caused 70,000 deaths by June 1919. Germans felt betrayed by the treaty, and its harshness was blamed upon the Republic, ie. the 'Stab in the back' myth which said that Germany hadn't lost the war, but had been forfeited by weak politicians and Jews. Created economic instability, as clause 232 mandates that Germany pay for all wartime damage, while other clauses weakened their ability to pay.
