The Marshall Plan was an American initiative to provide economic aid to Western Europe. The United States provided about $13 billion to help those nations rebuild after World War II. In return, the United States expected thee Western European nations to reject Soviet ideologies in a unified European economy. The Soviet Union rejected this and responded with the Molotov Plan, which provided assistance to Eastern European nations.
