On March 15, the new candidate
of the Renovacion party,
Colonel Jacobo Arbenz, assumes
the presidency. Arbenz orders
large infrastructure works and
replaces the industrialization
of the country; thanks to its
marked nationalist tendency
it receives the support of workers,
peasants, teachers and students.
Arbenz expropriates foreign
companies especially the United
Fruit Company and the reform
becomes one of the deepest in
Latin America.
